> Even K-Netz recognize how important it is for KHH artists to use their platform for more than just bragging about money and girls because that’s not what hip hop is about (saw an article on Netizenbuzz about it, would’ve linked it but the subreddit won’t let me). It has definitely evolved over the years but we can’t ignore the foundation. Hip hop has a long history of being tied to police brutality and racial injustice. They’re always listening to the newest hh songs and jumping on the latest hh trends but are suddenly mute when it comes to things like this. So many KHH artists are incredibly tuned into American Hip Hop culture and have built successful careers off it. Saw this comment in a /r/kpop thread and thought it was important to add here. Hopefully having major artists speak up more diligently will be able to create a dialogue. Too often in Korea and more broadly Asia/the East, ignorance regarding racial struggles and history is displayed among people who chose to use their culture to appeal to broader audiences. It’s frustrating to see artists like Owen disrespect the issue in America so much and pull the “reverse racism” card when dealing with criticism from fans regarding the situation. I’m glad that some people who operate in Korea feel comfortable enough and have enough respect to disavow what’s going on in America. Undoubtedly the Korean American artists are the ones with more knowledge and nuance surrounding situations like this, but native Korean artists should also study up on the stuff they pay homage to so often, and be able to use their platform to respect the culture they clamor about. While this is not an issue that may necessarily pertain fully to Koreans, this is a black and hip hop issue that Korean rappers SHOULD be more and raise aware(ness) of, as they are indebted to such.
